Vaccinations to support your baby’s health

How vaccination in pregnancy protects your baby

Getting vaccinated against influenza, whooping cough and RSV during pregnancy allows protective antibodies to pass through the mother’s placenta to the baby. This protects the baby from birth and in their first few months of life when they are most vulnerable to serious illness and cannot yet be vaccinated themselves.

Under the National Immunisaton Program, the below vaccinations can be admininstered for free to pregnant women by your Community Care Chemist pharmacist:

  • Influenza (flu) – Recommended anytime during pregnancy
  • Pertussis* (whooping cough) – Recommended at 20-32 weeks
  • Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) – Recommended at 28-36 weeks

You can safely have the influenza, whooping cough and the maternal RSV vaccine in the same visit. If you have any concerns around the timing of vaccinations, chat to your Community Care Chemist pharmacist immuniser.
