Your Community Care Chemist pharmacist can issue an Absence from Work Certificate as a quick and easy alternative to visiting your doctor for a medical certificate when you or a loved one are unwell. 

Your Community Care Chemist pharmacist can issue an Absence from Work Certificate to cover up to two day’s sick leave from work for: 
  1. Personal leave– if you are unable to work due to injury or personal illness 
  2. Carer’s leave– if you are required to look after someone who is unwell

***Note that Absence from Works Certificates cannot be provided for absences related to pregnancy or compassionate leave.***

Asking for an Absence from Work Certificate?

We recommend you confirm with your employer FIRST if a certificate issued by a pharmacist will be satisfactory evidence for your sick leave in lieu of a medical certificate.

Can a chemist give you a doctor’s certificate?

No, but our pharmacist’s can issue you an Absence from Work Certificate to cover up to two days of personal or carer’s leave.

‘Absence from Work Certificate’, ‘Medical Certificate’ or ‘Doctor’s Certificate’ aren’t they the same? What’s the difference? 

An Absence from Work certificate is an official document issued by a pharmacist stating that someone is unable to attend work due to illness, injury or needing to care for an immediate family or household member.

It’s not the same as a Medical or Doctor’s Certificate, which is issued by a Medical Practitioner or GP (doctor). 

How can I get an Absence from Work Certificate? 

Our pharmacists can issue an Absence from Work Certificate in person during opening hours at our pharmacies in Bellarine Village Newcomb, Belmont, Geelong West, Grovedale or North Geelong and from our new pharmacy in Lara. 

Please bring a form of identification with you and any supporting documentation. 

To issue you with an Absence from Work Certificate, a consultation will be conducted in-person with a pharmacist in-store, for the purpose of assessing your fitness for work or reasons for carer’s leave. 

There is a charge of $34.95 for Absence from Work consultations.

Your Absence from Work consultation is not intended to replace medical treatment, opinion or diagnosis.  

An Absence from Work Certificates is issued at the discretion of the pharmacist conducting the consultation.  

Do I need an appointment to get an Absence from Work Certificate? 

Walk-ins are available at our pharmacies across Geelong and Lara for Absence from Work Certificate’s on a first-come first-served basis.

For timely service, we do recommend booking a time at your nearest Community Care Chemist location.

Is there a fee? 

Yes,  there is a fee of $34.95 for an Absence from Work Certificate Consultation, even if a certificate is not issued by the pharmacist.

What sort of conditions can I get an Absence from Work Certificate for? 

Our pharmacists can only issue Absence from Work Certificates for conditions within their scope of practice, such as minor ailments (for example; allergies, asthma, minor burns, colds and coughs, constipation, pain, nausea and vomiting). 

If your illness or injury is beyond the pharmacist’s ability to assess, they will refer you to a doctor or other relevant healthcare professional for further support. 

Can I get the certificate backdated? 

No, your certificate is only valid from the date of your consultation in the pharmacy, not before or after and can cover up to two days’ absence from work.
