skin cancers account for around 80% of all newly diagnosed cancers
the majority of skin cancers are caused by exposure to the sun
the incidence of skin cancer in Australia is one of the highest in the world, two to three times the rates in Canada, the US and the UK.
Early sun exposure can lead to skin damage, which, if left unchecked, may result in skin cancer. Signs of sun damage, like hyperpigmentation, dry skin, and wrinkles, are early indicators to be aware of.
You can take some simple steps to protect your skin this summer!
Apply sunscreen properly: Use at least seven teaspoons of sunscreen, applying it 20 minutes before sun exposure. Don’t forget the face, neck, arms, legs, and back.
Choose a sunscreen with SPF 50: Ensure your sunscreen meets Australian standards for optimal protection.
Avoid storing sunscreen in hot places: Sunscreen can lose effectiveness if stored in high temperatures (e.g. inside a car).
Wear protective clothing: Hats, sunglasses, and long sleeves are crucial for additional protection.
Stick to the shade where possible, especially during the middle of the day.
